This Saturday the Missile Stakes 2012 will kick off Group racing for this year’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the Warwick Farm clash attracting a somewhat disappointing field of hopefuls.
Just eight horses, which are lacking a bit of class on other years, have been accepted for the $125,000 Group 3 McGrath Missile Stakes (1200m) which is due to jump as Warwick Farm Race 6 at 3:35pm (local time).
The top-rated and fancied of the 2012 Missile Stakes field is the Peter Snowden-trained Pinwheel who came up trumps with barrier five.
The seven-year-old Lonhro gelding was last seen running a brave fourth to the Peter Moody-trained Mid Summer Music in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane on June 9 and will be out on Saturday to go two better than their third to Rain Affair in last year’s Missile Stakes.
The bookies are fancying them to do just that with Pinwheel the dominant $2.40 in the Missile Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au.
Their short price looks deserving too with Pinwheel boasting an excellent first-up record (5-3-1-0), good record at Warwick Farm (4-2-1-0) and they are also a 1200m specialist (18-8-7-2).
So who are their main dangers?
The next shortest-priced fancy in the Missile Stakes betting markets this year is then the Joe Pride-trained Title paying $3.80 to hand their local trainer with back-to-back wins in the race following the success of their classy stablemate Rain Affair 12 months ago.
Drawn one outside of Pinwheel in barrier six, Title is due to be ridden by Corey Brown and like the top elect also comes off a last start fourth in Group 1 company.
A six-year-old son of Honours List, Title last raced in April at Randwick when beaten only one and a quarter lengths by smart Queenslander Temple Of Boom in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
The other single-figure fancies are then David Payne’s Thorn Park seven-year-old Centennial Park on the rails with Glyn Schofield in the saddle as they look to break a lengthy winning drought that goes back to February 2011, and Darren Smith’s veteran galloper Welkom Gold who both pay $6.50 to upstage the top two.
For punters looking for a little more value in the Missile Stakes bets this year with the Gerald Ryan-trained Adnocon ($11) out for their fourth stakes success, or even John Thompson’s consistent Encosta De Lago eight-year-old Tagus ($17) could prove excellent money.
