A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer John Sargent has revealed Kirramosa is likely to return to racing in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 9th ahead of a preparation geared towards both the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Quickly building to the task through the 2013 spring, Kirramosa undoubtedly hit peak condition when winning both the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) most recently.
Remaining in the paddock for the entirety of the 2014 Autumn Carnival after chipping a bone in her fetlock, Sargent told AAP the Missile Stakes represents the perfect return to racing for the Alamosa filly, who will also likely contest the Group 1 Epsom Handicap over a mile on October 4th.
“I think she is a genuine stayer for the Cups but sometimes they don’t take that step as four-year-olds,” Sargent said.
“She will start off in the Missile Stakes and step up in distance from there.
“The Epsom Handicap over 1600 metres could also be an option.”
Partnering Kirramosa in a successful track gallop at Randwick last Saturday, jockey Tommy Berry said the rising four-year-old displayed no signs of a horse previously injured.
“She pulled up like she hadn’t been around,” Berry said.
“She is in great order.”
Securing an impressive total of four wins and one minor place from just eight competitive starts so far, Kirramosa debuted to racing with two impressive performances abroad in New Zealand through the 2013 autumn; winning the Fire N Ice Refrigeration Maiden (1200m) first-up before running on for fourth in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in Awapuni.
Unlucky to finish fourth when blocked for a run in her first Australian appearance through August, the filly out of Freyja continued to build in form an class on her way to her most recent back-to-back victories; finishing fourth amongst classy competition in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) most notably.
Yet to appear on track through 2014, Kirramosa is currently available at generous odds of $15 for success in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on October 18th, or an incredible $26 to win the Race that Stops a Nation on November 4th with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
