A talented field of just nine runners have been confirmed to line up for a tilt at the 2014 Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, offering punters exceptional value and several key opportunities to place a winning bet.
A standout in major sprinting events through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Rebel Dane is currently featured as sole occupant of the top line of betting for success in the Missile Stakes first-up on Saturday, available at odds of $3.60 ahead of Sweet Idea ($3.80), Messene ($4), Boban and Weary; currently sharing the fourth line at a quote of $9.
Will Rebel Dane kick off his 2014 spring campaign in the best way possible, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Securing an impressive total of nine wins and two minor places from just 13 competitive starts so far, Messene will leave from the ideal barrier 1 in the 2014 Missile Stakes and will be partnered by newly-crown Sydney premiership jockey James McDonald. A standout performer over the 2014 autumn, the Lonhro gelding won the Listed John McGrath National Sprint (1400m) first-up before charging home to win the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) by three lengths on March 22nd; returning to the spelling paddock after finishing a still-credible seventh in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th. An exceptional first-up performer, Messene is more than worth consideration for a wager at current odds.
Yet to finish outside the places since transferring to the care of trainer Chris Waller from his native France in 2013, Weary arguably offers punters the best value for money at current $9 to win the 2014 Missile Stakes, or $2.60 to run a place. Finishing third amongst classy competition in the TAB Rewards 3.y.o+ (1400m) first-up on February 15th, the Astronomer Royal gelding ran on to finish second behind Messene in the Ajax Stakes and won the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) on April 5th before finishing third in the Doncaster Mile and second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m). Allocated the central barrier 4, renowned jockey Hugh Bowman has been confirmed to take the ride on Weary in the Missile Stakes.
Sweet Idea ($3.80)
Arguably hitting peak condition over the summer and autumn, Sweet Idea contested and won a strong Randwick barrier trial two weeks ago and appears primed for an impressive first-up performance in the Missile Stakes. Winning her first three race starts including both the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) and Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), the Snitzel mare was disappointing when seventh in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) but responded in the best way possible when finishing second to Steps In Time in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
