Sweet Idea Wins 2014 Missile Stakes

August 11th, 2014

A notable performer over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Sweet Idea has kicked off her spring racing campaign in the best way possible; charging home to win the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Tommy Berry immediately steered Sweet Idea to the head of the pack, setting a reasonable tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend before maintaining a strong enough sprint to finish a nose in the clear of Messene and Rebel Dane; a fast-finishing Boban running on for fourth.

Understandably thrilled with Sweet Idea’s first-up performance in the Missile Stakes, Mark Newnham, stable foreman for trainer Gai Waterhouse said the plan was now to progress to the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on August 23rd before a trip to Melbourne to chase Group 1 glory.

“She has won almost $2 million without winning a Group One race and she deserves one,” Newnham said after the Missile Stakes.

“Gai’s plan is to run her in the Warwick Stakes in two weeks then look at Group One races in Melbourne.

“The Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Myer Classic are races on the radar.”

In-form hoop Berry delivered a typically strong ride on the Snitzel filly in the 2014 Missile Stakes and immediately laid the praise on the four-year-old after dismounting.

“She is very tough and she did it all herself,” Berry said.

“She bottomed out at the 100 metres but just kept going. Even when she bled she only got beaten a short half head.”

Having now contested a particularly impressive record of six wins and as many minor places from just 14 competitive starts, Sweet Idea has already laid the foundations for a strong and standout campaign through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
