Trainer Chris Waller was thrilled with the performance mustered by Weary in a strong Randwick barrier trial last Friday and has confirmed the classy French import will return to competition in Saturday’s Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m).
Weary stamped his claims as one to watch through his maiden Australian campaign during the 2014 Autumn Carnival; highlighted by success in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) and minors in each of the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).
Having been unable to produced anything of a competitive run of form through the Spring Carnival, the son of Astronomer Royal again found competitive form through his most recent preparation; capped by a close second to Pornichet in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9th.
Citing his impressive first-up record in seasons gone by, Waller is confident Weary will lay a great account for himself in the 2015 Missile Stakes, ahead of an early Spring Carnival target like the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
“He won the equivalent race to the Missile in the autumn and he had nice trial a week ago,” Waller told AAP.
“I think he will be my only runner in the race.
“He is a bit more forward than some of the others.”
Posting a career total of four wins and eight minors through 22 competitive starts so far, Weary charged home to win the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) upon resuming this year; progressing to third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) but failing to fire in either of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) or Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m); leading to a brief return to the paddock.
Weary is yet to be set for any specific major target through the 2015 Spring Carnival but Waller may elect to look at a race like the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) during early October should form and results warrant a berth.
Nominations for the 2015 Missile Stakes are due by midday today, while a final field and barrier draw will be completed and released on Wednesday.
