Seven runners have been included in 2016 Missile Stakes nominations, however the depth of talent underlines the race as undoubtedly the best so far in the lead-up to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Three-year-old Capitalist has not been seen since delivering a notable field a comfortable defeat in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and is poised to make his open company debut after being included in 2016 Missile Stakes nominations.
Capitalist immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow when debuting to racing for success in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) in October last year, and repeated the dose in the Wyong Magic Millions 2.y.o Classic (1100m) second-up in December.
Producing a particularly commanding effort to win the Gold Coast Magic 2.y.o Guineas (1200m) on January 9th, the Written Tycoon colt clearly required a run when resuming for second in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 5th, but responded perfectly via his dominant performance in the Golden Slipper.
Big Money carries good form into his fourth-up run and arguably has the fitness edge over the other 2016 Missile Stakes nominations.
A multiple stakes winner, Big Money won the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 13th but returned to the paddock for a freshen-up after failing to fire in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) a fortnight later.
Requiring a couple of runs to find form upon resuming, the Choisir gelding ran on for a close second in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) on July 13th and should prove tough to beat in his Sydney return on Saturday.
Godolphin will be offered a good chance of early spring success after trainer John O’Shea included consistent gelding Generalife in Missile Stakes nominations.
Posting nine wins and a further ten minors through thirty-six career starts so far, Generalife returned in autumn for fourth in the Southern Cross Stakes before again finishing just outsider the minors in the Liverpool City Cup.
Having returned to the paddock after placing fifth in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), O’Shea has been thrilled with the condition of the Lonhro gelding in the lead-up to his competitive return but is confident he will take plenty of benefit from the first-up run.
Rebel Dane, Smart Volatility, Tycoon Tara and Wouldnt It Be Nice complete the list of 2016 Missile Stakes nominations.
The 2015 Missile Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
